The author is one Sh\u014dy\u014d Makoto (or Shinjin?) \u900d\u9065\u771e\u4eba, not to be confused with Tsubouchi Sh\u014dy\u014d \u576a\u5185\u900d\u9065\u2014although his(?) name <em>is<\/em> a reference to the same passage from Zhuangzi. (In short, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/23015316\">zhenren<\/a><\/em> \u771e\u4eba is the \u201ctrue person\u201d who has <a href=\"https:\/\/baopu81.wordpress.com\/2013\/11\/29\/classical-daoism-is-there-really-such-a-thing-part-4-3-3\/\">mastered the art<\/a> of <em>xiaoyao you<\/em> \u900d\u9065\u904a \u201cunfettered wandering.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, the deal with these <em>dodoitsu<\/em> is that their otherwise unremarkable gags include \u201cmodern and progressive\u201d vocabulary written in katakana. Here are a few examples, with the M&amp;P vocabulary in bold and quick trots for reference (alas, I do not have time to give these lines the translatorly attention they deserve).<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left:1em\"><strong>Yongu giruru<\/strong> no\/ sugata o kaete\/ nushi no <strong>waifu<\/strong> to\/ iwaretai<br>\n(The <strong>young girl<\/strong> wishes to change her form and be called his [your?] <strong>waifu<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p style=\"padding-left:1em\"><strong>Wocchi<\/strong> sagetari\/ <strong>b\u016bto<\/strong> o haite\/ neko ni misetai\/ kaikwa-f\u016b<br>(Dangling a <strong>watch<\/strong> and wearing <strong>boots<\/strong>\u2014a progressive [or civilized, etc.] mien one wishes to show the cat)<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p style=\"padding-left:1em\"><strong>Raitoharuto<\/strong> no\/ omae o shirazu\/ horeta wa watashi no\/ kaikaburi<br>(Falling in love without knowing the <strong>light-hearted<\/strong> [i.e., frivolous, unfaithful] [side of] you was my overestimation [of you])<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Note: \u201cLight-hearted\u201d here corresponds to <em>uwaki<\/em>, which literally does mean \u201cfloating spirit\u201d but nowadays almost always means \u201cstraying, cheating\u201d in the romantic sense. Not sure off the top of my head about the situation for <em>uwaki<\/em> or indeed \u201clight-hearted\u201d in 1879!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And of course:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p style=\"padding-left:1em\"><strong>Sosaichii<\/strong> de no\/ kuj\u014d mo shirazu\/ gonsai-kurui no\/ <strong>n\u014dburuman<\/strong><br>(The <strong>nobleman<\/strong> crazy about his mistress, ignoring the complaints in <strong>society<\/strong>)<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meiji authors: We live in a&#8230; This is actually from some \u201cModern and progressive dodoitsu\u201d (kinsei kaikwa dodoitsu) published in volume 3 of Kibi dango magazine (1879).
